A total of 483 candidates contested on 120 seats in 30 wards of Surat Municipal Corporation, out of which 120 were from the BJP, 117 from Congress, 111 from AAP and other smaller parties and Independents.
According to data from the Gujarat State Election Commission portal, Congress won 1,740 seats while others, including AAP and AIMIM, accounted for 755.
Calling it a victory of India, the Jamalpur-Khadia assembly constituency’s Congress MLA Imran Khedawala said this had happened for the first time in nearly 70 years.
The AAP, which won 27 seats in the 2021 civic body elections, has been reduced to four seats and the Congress, which had no seats in the previous city body, managed to win a seat.
