The leader of numerous Satyagrahas and flag marches early on, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a formidable organising force. The title of 'Sardar' recognised these leadership qualities.
Ahmedabad was largely a city confined to the fort walls. Patel expanded the city outside it, with town planning schemes adding new roads and drainage systems, libraries, schools, hospitals, and other public amenities.
