Director Antoine Fuqua’s biopic on Michael Jackson just moonwalked his way to the top of the box office — claiming the No. 1 spot while on pace to shatter records with an over $90 million weekend.

“Michael” hauled in a staggering $39.9 million on its opening Friday, according to the Numbers .

According to industry insiders, the flick’s true potential was revealed when the film earned $12.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews, as per the Hollywood Reporter .
