Screenshots feel harmless because they are easy to create and easy to send.
That is exactly why they can be risky.
A screenshot can expose much more than the one detail you actually wanted to share.
Screenshots often contain accidental context
A screenshot may include:
contact names
profile photos
email addresses
phone numbers
notifications
account balances
order numbers
usernames
message previews
timestamps
app names
device information
The useful part may occupy only a small area.
Everything else can become accidental disclosure.
The problem is visual, not just technical
People often think about metadata when discussing image privacy.
But with screenshots, the bigger risk is usually visible information.
The file may have no meaningful EXIF location data at all.
That does not matter if the screenshot clearly shows:
a private conversation
an address
a booking reference
a customer ID
a username
a QR code
The image itself is the privacy problem.
