Naomi Osaka crashed out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday, losing in the second round in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to Mia Pohankova, a wild card from Slovakia who turned 18 last week.
“Honestly, I didn’t think it was a bad match,” Osaka said afterward. “She’s a really good player. It was my first time playing her, and yeah, I mean, I would have wanted to win, but oh well.”
Osaka started brightly by winning the first two games, but could only take one of the next seven as Pohankova wrested control of the contest.
