A few months back, a chat with renowned South African filmmaker Alan van Gysen revealed that he was heading to Alaska for a new film project. Yep, that's right, all the way from the wave-rich coastline of his homeland to the last frontier of surf exploration in North America. That's a one-way distance of over 10,000 miles. Now the film is out, and the destination and its ecosystems are as much characters as the surfers and surfing that take place. It's the type of place you shouldn't wander far without a weapon — not because of crime, but because of bears and wolves. The film is The Outer Edge of Alaska , and it follows weird wave-chaser Dylan Graves and a small crew through the Shumagin Islands. A super remote island chain off the southwest edge of the Alaskan mainland where the Ring of Fire meets some of the most productive marine waters on earth.
