Michael C. Hall has reflected on playing Dexter Morgan for two decades .

The 55-year-old actor first took on the role of the homicidal forensic technician in Dexter , which ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013.

He reprised the character for Dexter: New Blood in 2021 and for Dexter: Resurrection last year. The latter show returns for a second season this week on Paramount+.

Speaking to People , Hall said of the character: “I think he’s most surprised that he’s still alive. I mean, I think if you’d asked him, given what he does, 20 years ago, I think he imagined that he would be probably dead or caught by now.”

The character survived an apparently fatal gunshot at the conclusion of New Blood , leading Hall to say: “Ever since he was resurrected and didn’t die, I think his life has felt like gravy.…
