Rui Santos and Sara Santos have released a new version of their ESP-IDF eBook on Random Nerd Tutorials. ESP-IDF is Espressif’s own framework for programming ESP32 chips, built around C and FreeRTOS, with lower level access to peripherals than the Arduino core gives you.

The book is a 520 page color PDF split into 8 modules, with source code, schematics, and screenshots. It starts with installing the ESP-IDF extension in VS Code and creating a project, then moves through GPIO configuration, FreeRTOS tasks and queues and timers, deep sleep and wake sources, I2C with a BME280 sensor, WiFi and a small web server, Bluetooth Low Energy as both peripheral and central, and ESP-NOW sender and receiver code.

Any ESP32 board works with the examples, though the authors used an ESP32-S3. They recommend some C and prior ESP32 experience first, so this is not a first microcontroller book.…
