So I've been stuck on this pattern for years. I'll be on the couch thinking "I should go do a hobby I’ve been putting off, like build that Lego set" and then... I just don't. It's not hard. I'm not overwhelmed. The box is RIGHT THERE. I just can't cross the gap between wanting to do it and actually doing it. Apparently this is called activation resistance. Which was validating in of itself to addressing this kind of paralysis. The task isn't the problem — starting is. Once I'm building I can go for hours. But getting off the couch might as well be an olympic event. Anyway here's what actually helped me. I changed my hobby backlog by drawing my small activation step on a physical blank playing card, (putting the minifigures together), and when I finish making them I flip the card over. I know it sounds ridiculous but my brain does NOT care about checking a box on a to do list. It just doesn't. But flipping a card feels like something happened.…
