Developer rh1tech has posted frank-quake2 on GitHub, a port of Quake II that runs on the RP2350. It targets the FRANK and Murmulator M2 boards, which output HDMI over HSTX, and the Waveshare RP2350-PiZero, which does HDMI through PIO. Sound comes out over HDMI or from an I2S DAC. A USB keyboard and mouse handle input, and the game data lives on an SD card.
The engine is the ESP32-S3 port of Quake II, built from id’s source by way of quake2generic, with the software renderer and baseq2 linked in. The platform layer, meaning drivers, clocks and linker layout, comes from frank-castle. It is marked work in progress.
8 MB of PSRAM is not enough to hold the maps, so models and skins are read straight from flash. The first boot builds a roughly 14 MB image from the pak files, takes about 90 seconds, and then restarts. Boards with 8 MB of flash get a smaller image and leave out the largest assets. No game data ships with the repository, so a retail copy patched to 3.20 is required.
