I am sure this is not a revelatory feeling for any of us, but I find the way I communicate deeply impacts my dating life. The people I date know I'm autistic - I'm sure to at least hint at neurodivergence before continuing to speak with someone - but they seem to either forget or not take me seriously when I tell them. Some common communication errors I come into contact with:
Me: I love going to the movies and concerts alone! I would even like to try solo travelling. I find it very freeing, being on my own schedule.
Them: but you would want to do things with me right? Like go on dates?
Me: Well yes, of course! That is why we are talking on a dating app, I would love to go on dates.
Them: Haha that's great, I was just joking.
What does this mean? They were kidding about going on a date? Or they were joking about me enjoying alone time? Why is everyone always "just kidding/joking"?
Another example:
Them: Would you like to go on a date soon?
Me: Yes, I would love that!…
