This gateway shared by Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties provides a vital link for commuters and freight, so the initial plan to shut the freeway down for 55 hours during a weekend was not a popular one. In response to the city of Corona’s objections, the team reshaped its strategy to avoid closures by redrawing traffic control limits, staging work beside live lanes and breaking critical operations into repeatable overnight windows. This included setting a 15-ft-dia reinforcement cage with a 350-ton crane.

Below grade, differing site conditions turned up at four bents, and two more produced obstructions that weren’t on any drawings.…
