Beyond its setup, the 2012 film has earned recognition among time-travel favorites. In October, entertainment site Looper ranked it second among the 21st century’s five best films in that category.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Looper makeup changed his lunch

Initially, writer-director Rian Johnson cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as young Joe, a killer who receives targets from the future. Then, Willis joined as older Joe, leaving the team with two actors who looked very different.

Behind the scenes, makeup designer Kazuhiro Tsuji and artist Jamie Kelman helped close that gap. Each morning, Gordon-Levitt spent nearly three hours getting new facial features, contact lenses, and other changes.
