Toto Wolff joked after the race that he had come up with a novel plan to stop his driver Kimi Antonelli from repeatedly incurring track limits warnings in future.
“I want to put a pillow from the hotel under his a--- so he can see the road,” the Mercedes team principal said about the 5ft 6in Italian, who was shown a black-and-white flag in Singapore – effectively a final warning – for multiple violations.
Wolff could afford to laugh. Antonelli finished third here in the end which, combined with team-mate George Russell’s ninth place, lifted the 20-year-old 102 points clear in the title race. Antonelli could conceivably become F1’s youngest ever world champion as early as the next round in Austin in a fortnight’s time.
