I was blown away by Smithereens in a mixed kind of way. It was a pretty incredible 90 minutes but a bit too close to home. Reminded me of the bad old days and how fast and loose some of us used to play. I searched for references to it in this subreddit and was most struck by a comment that said it was the film they wished Frances Ha had been. I’ve been thinking about that and I know what they mean. I loved so very much about Frances Ha but maybe not the ending. A real Frances Ha would not have got it together as neatly and as tidily as she did. I liked the movie but it really did want to have its cake (girl mess, dysfunction and misunderstandability) and eat it too (happy career and housing ending). I thought.
