Across the UK, countless cities have rich histories, distinct accents, vibrant art scenes and strong regional identities, yet only one can secure the sought-after UK City of Culture designation.
Blackpool , Milton Keynes , Sheffield and Wrexham were this week named as the four shortlisted locations in the running for the 2029 honour.
Every applicant will be given a minimum of £125,000 to craft its proposal, with the eventual winner gaining the title alongside a £10 million prize fund, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
As part of the bidding process, each city council was asked to demonstrate how it would harness culture to transform its communities, boost economic growth, create new opportunities and foster a greater sense of local pride.
Staged every four years, the title is currently held by Bradford.
