Smalltalk at the beginning of the interview: after saying hi, is it too much to say, "I'm so excited to meet you after reading your work in XYZ"?

Should I stick to something brief like "I'm so excited to meet you" and leave it at that, then let the interviewer respond and see where the conversation flows from there? Or maybe mention something non-work related or crack a joke?

I'm wondering when is a good time during the interview to show (not just tell) that we're looking forward to getting to know them and establish rapport that way.

Nah you're overthinking it, just say the thing about their work and then shut up and let them respond.
