E Ink announced Kaleido 4, the newest generation of its color ePaper platform, in a press release from Billerica, Massachusetts. Compared to the previous generation, Kaleido 4 doubles color gamut volume to more than 40K, raises white reflectance by 15%, and improves contrast by 50%. New algorithms push video playback to 18 frames per second.
The panel uses an oxide TFT backplane that supports higher driving voltages and faster refresh. E Ink says the result reduces the grainy look that color ePaper has had, and handles charts, presentations and illustrations as well as text.
The first shipping product with the display is the M10C II smart ePaper notebook from Hanvon Technology. Hanvon pairs the panel with its own timing controller and pressure floating technology for 27% faster page turning and scrolling, plus a redesigned front light. The included digital pen is wireless and battery free with 8,192 pressure levels, and the writing surface is micro-etched tempered glass.
