On YouTube's Home screen, the Shorts shelf sometimes has an X. Tap it and the shelf goes away, but not for good: news reports quote the message as "Shelf will be hidden for 30 days", and YouTube's own help doesn't describe the X or give any period. If you want the shelf and the Shorts tab gone until you decide otherwise, the app I make, minulo , hides both, and hiding them is free. Below is what the X actually does, why some people don't see it, and where Shorts stay even after the shelf is gone.
YouTube facts here come from YouTube Help. Because the help pages don't cover the X on the Shorts shelf, that part relies on news articles, and I say which article says what. Menu names can change with app updates.
