When an agent can open pull requests, the defaults that worked for a team of people start to leak. Here's a checklist worth running on a repo before an agent gets write access. None of it needs new tools.
1. Give the agent its own identity
Use a GitHub App or a separate bot account, not a person's token. GitHub won't let the author of a PR approve it, so if the agent opens PRs as itself, nobody can accidentally "approve their own" agent work. The history also shows plainly who opened what: something[bot] opened it, a named person approved it.
2. Require a pull request and at least one approval
In a branch ruleset (or classic branch protection) on main : turn on Require a pull request before merging and set Required approvals to 1 or more. Without this, an agent with write access can push straight to main , and auto-merge ( gh pr merge --auto ) only waits for checks.
