There aren't many surf trips where the biggest hazards include grizzly bears, freezing water, and an ocean phenomenon known as “square waves.” But that's exactly what Blair Conklin signed up for. The Laguna Beach native, three-time world champion skimboarder, wave pool aficionado, and one of surfing's foremost novelty wave hunters recently ventured deep into the frozen wilderness of Alaska aboard The Milo , a rugged expedition vessel exploring the state's maze of fjords, glaciers, and untouched coastline. The reward? Perfect, empty waves breaking beneath snow-capped mountains. “It’s pretty easy to get unmotivated when it’s raining, when it’s cold,” Conklin admitted. “There’s a lot of things working against you. Everyone that was on the boat appreciated every day for what that day brought. You connect with each other on a different level.
