I picked up the criterion release for these films last November, but never got around to watching either until this week. I personally significantly preferred The Emigrants to The New Land ; I would reccomend reading my Letterboxd reviews for both films for my full thoughts on each (note, I’m not exactly the best film critic, apologizes in advance), but in short I thought that The Emigrants contained significant elements of a historical docudrama that allowed me to become easily enraptured in it as if I were watching a historical documentary, elements which I did not find present in The New Land . Furthermore, I also thought The New Land ’s handling of certain historical events, particularly the Dakota war, was subpar, and I thought it had some pacing issues. I should clarify I still like both films and loved the duology overall, it’s just that I thought The Emigrants was impeccable while I thought The New Land was just good.…
