(RNS) — Atlanta megachurch pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell wants to clarify that leaked footage of him is not what it sounds like. A viral clip showed him using racist dog whistles to reveal alleged spiritual truths in a “private team rally” before speaking to an estimated 80,000 people at ACCESS Texas , a sold-out free prayer event in Arlington, Texas, on Oct. 10.

“The devil is strategic,” the 2819 Church lead pastor insists, while warning of “demonic forces that’s trying to take Texas right under our noses.” While he doesn’t specifically refer to immigrants or Muslims, it’s obvious that’s who he’s talking about if you’ve heard his past comments.…
