Related video: Helen Haines' husband confirms Australian MP has had second leg amputated
Australian independent MP Helen Haines is in a serious but stable condition, spokesperson for the Alfred hospital in Melbourne says, after both her legs were amputated following an alleged car attack.
The 65-year-old representative for Indi was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday in what police allege was a deliberate act.
Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
Haines’s husband Phil said that “her heart and her mind are in good shape”.
More than AU$730,000 (£360,000) has been raised for Save the Children in her honour while her staff prepare to reopen her electorate offices.
