How do I best care for my young trees this winter?

I have a foot tall peach tree I started from seed in a container, a two foot fig I started from a cutting, and a very unhappy, struggling apricot that's maybe 2.5 years old. It's really not looking good, hasn't grown any leaves in months, many have fallen off and just seems stalled, I'm planning on digging it up when it goes dormant and putting it in a pot as my soil is almost all clay and I don't think I could give it enough support to live in ground. We also had an absolutely horrible growing season with excessive heat and drought:'(

I have space for all of them indoors, but I'm wondering if they should stay outdoors to build hardiness? I'm in central NC, we rarely see freezing temps. Thank you!
