Richard Hammond has suggested there might no longer be a public “appetite” for Top Gear if the hit motoring show were launched in its original format today.

Hammond presented the BBC series alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May between 2002 and 2015 before the trio departed.

Top Gear went on hiatus in 2022 following a near-fatal accident involving presenter Andrew Flintoff, but the BBC plans to reboot the show.

Hammond said that it was “a little insight into the way the average male brain works”, and he is not sure if the public would go for such a show today, saying: “It’s a completely different time.”

He also said that it would be good to see women on shows like Top Gear , as “TV has a role to play in representation”.
