I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.
I Live on the lower Oregon coast. Half locals, half retirees, half tourists and half golfers.
Just from walking around and observing, it seems to me that when a retiree dies, the adult children are usually 500 miles away and suddenly having to deal with cleaning out and selling a 500k house.
Kids think they are going to get 500k free money out of the house! Dream time.
But then a Realtor or two comes in, as does an appraiser. Or two.
Suddenly kids are informed of work that should be done, but probably only requiring 50 or 100k. Or so.
Kids think, ok, we will still get 400k free money, so they approve it. 400k!
Then the construction guys come in, and they find some leaks, roof work, flooring that should be replaced as well. Only 50k more. Probably. Probably, but we don't know until we start pulling stuff up.
You can see where this is going.…
