So much for Xabi Alonso’s call for cool heads from his Chelsea players. Cole Palmer lost his and was sent off, while goalkeeper Mike Penders punched the ball into his own net to give Tottenham Hotspur a helping hand on their way to a second win at Stamford Bridge in 42 attempts.
This was hardly “the Battle of the Bridge” , but Chelsea blew up during a ridiculous 10-minute spell towards the end of a game in which Tottenham had bossed possession but not looked like scoring.
Palmer was lucky to stay on the pitch in the 70th minute, when he shoved his pelvis into the face of Mateus Fernandes after the Tottenham midfielder had stopped him racing through with a foul and a handball.
Christopher Kavanagh, the referee, let him off with a yellow card, but 10 minutes later Palmer inexplicably gave Kavanagh no choice but to book him again and send him off, following a late challenge on substitute Conor Gallagher.
"It's PETULANT from Cole Palmer...you have to take it on the chin"
Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge…
