Best books about jazz

I'm about halfway through 'But Beautiful' by Geoff Dyer and its the best book I've read for a long time.

The only other book about jazz I've actually read is the Miles Davis autobiography, so I'm not claiming to be an expert on the subject.

What I'm really digging about this book is how the prose resembles jazz... its difficult to explain. The subject is jazz, but the sentences and paragraphs flow like jazz music.

On that point, I suppose you could include a lot of Kerouac's writing on jazz, which I've also read.

Anyway, what are you favourite books about jazz?
