Special to SURFER from Tanja Piha , chair of the Finnish Surfing Association and the only woman currently leading a national surfing federation. Inside the United Nations headquarters, far from any coastline, a different kind of lineup was being discussed. Surfing is often held up as one of the world’s most free and inclusive sports. Out in the ocean, the conditions are the same for everyone. Waves don’t discriminate. In the lineup, at least in theory, everyone has a shot. But beyond the waterline, the picture looks different. At the UN Commission on the Status of Women, a side event titled “The Only Woman in the Lineup: Breaking Waves, Breaking Barriers” brought surfing into a much larger conversation about power, leadership, and who gets to shape the future of sport. The session was co-organized by Finnish surfing federation leader Tanja Piha, Surfer Editor-in-Chief Jake Howard and Australian surf activist Lucy Small.…
