Hidden deep in the South Pacific, Point Nemo is the planet’s “oceanic pole of inaccessibility”—the spot in the ocean farther from land than anywhere else. It sits roughly 1,670 miles from the nearest landmass in every direction. View this post on Instagram As a recent Instagram post from Atlas Obscura puts it: “In the middle of the South Pacific is a place so remote that astronauts aboard the International Space Station can sometimes be closer than people on land.” That’s not hyperbole. When the ISS passes directly overhead at roughly 250 miles above Earth, its astronauts are dramatically closer than Point Nemo’s nearest land, 1,670 miles away.
