Most first SaaS projects die from tool choice, not from bad ideas. You open ten tabs, compare frameworks, and two weekends later you still have no signup form. Here is a simple way to pick a first SaaS tech stack that you can ship, maintain, and understand.
Start with the product, not the framework
Write three lines before you open docs:
Who is the user?
What is the one action they must complete?
What must be true for that action to work (auth, payments, file upload, email)?
If the answer is "a form, a database, and email," you do not need a microservices mesh. You need a boring stack that gets that path live.
Use four buckets, not forty tools
Group decisions like this:
Bucket Question Good default for a first SaaS
App Where does UI + API live? One full-stack framework you already know
Data Where does state live? One managed Postgres (or SQLite while tiny)
Auth How do users sign in? One auth library or hosted auth, not custom crypto
Ops How do you deploy and watch it?…
