Introduction: What If AI Could Both See and Read?
Imagine uploading a photograph of a busy road to an AI system and asking, “What problems can you identify in this picture?” Instead of simply detecting objects, the system might describe the vehicles, identify traffic congestion, read visible road signs and explain what it observes in natural language.
This is one of the exciting possibilities of Vision-Language Models (VLMs) .
As I explored this topic, I discovered that artificial intelligence is no longer limited to processing text or recognising objects in images separately. VLMs are designed to connect visual information with language, allowing machines to answer questions about images, describe scenes and perform tasks that require both visual and textual understanding.
In this blog, I will explain what VLMs are, how they work, where they are used, and what challenges researchers are still trying to solve.
