Let them enjoy the fun of being in the ocean and progress at their own speed. Some kids are more competitive than others and they'll push themselves by setting personal goals or comparing their surfing skills to those of their peers. Others may just be stoked cruising at their own pace and prefer a more casual approach. Don't make it a competition, let them dictate the pace, just sit back and enjoy the process.
