What is T5? An Overview of the Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer

T5 stands for "Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer." It's a large language model from Google Research. T5's core idea is simple: every natural language processing (NLP) task can be framed as converting one piece of text into another . Whether you're translating, summarizing, answering questions, or classifying sentences, it's all “text in, text out.”

For example:

Translation, English to French

Input: "translate English to French: That’s delicious."

Output: "C’est délicieux."

Summarization

Input: "summarize: The avocado is a fruit ..."

Output: "Avocado is a fruit."

Question Answering

Input: "question: Who wrote Hamlet? context: Hamlet is a play by William Shakespeare."

Output: "William Shakespeare."

There are no special output layers for classification. No task-specific labels or reserved tokens. Everything is treated as a string.
