GitHub Universe 2026 opened on October 28, 2026 in San Francisco with a message that is easy to miss if you only read the feature list: GitHub no longer thinks of Copilot as a coding assistant. It thinks of it as the delivery system itself — the thing that takes a task from an issue, a request or a production metric, through agents, review and deployment, while the developer directs rather than types. The headline features are real, but the infrastructure confession underneath them is the more honest story: agents are now generating so much code that GitHub itself had to be rebuilt to survive it.
