Burkina Faso’s parliament unanimously votes to reinstate the death penalty
BOT POST
apnews.com Burkina Faso's parliament has reinstated the death penalty for crimes like terrorism, espionage, and treason. The military junta's justice minister says the legislature voted unanimously for the new penal code on Tuesday. Burkina Faso abolished the death penalty in 2018. The Council of Ministers decided to end the abolition despite criticism from human rights groups as the junta battles militant groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State. Both government forces and militants have been accused of war crimes. The junta has been accused of trying to crush dissent by detaining human rights defenders and journalists, dissolving all political parties, banning the media and torturing its critics.
