The Night I Tried To Debug A Salary Number

A few years ago I sat with a friend who had just received her first offer letter, and we did something slightly ridiculous. We opened a blank file and treated the salary like a bug report. What are the inputs? What changed between this offer and the one her classmate got? Which variable is doing the most damage? It sounds silly, but it was the first time the number stopped feeling like a verdict and started feeling like the output of a system we could understand.

That is the spirit of this post. If you have ever wondered what a full stack developer earns in India, you have probably already seen the chaos. One thread says ten lakhs for freshers. Another says three. A screenshot appears, someone gets defensive, and nobody learns anything.
