I ran 40 miles in the Brooks Hyperion Max 4 — here’s why I think it misses the mark

Tom's Guide Verdict

The Brooks Hyperion Max 4 is notionally built for speed with a springy foam and plastic plate in its midsole, but it’s too heavy and ponderous to be an effective fast training shoe, and it undermines its potential to be a fun, easy-run shoe with a cutout that reduces its stability. Add in the high price, and this is one to swerve.

Reasons to buy

+ Comfortable for long runs

+ Bouncy midsole

+ Built to last

Reasons to avoid

- Too heavy for a speed shoe

- Medial cutout reduces stability

- Expensive
