In a few weeks, I’m leaving the US and moving to France for my semi-retirement chapter. I’ve lived on the east coast for 30+ years: Jersey suburbs & the city, all the stages of adult life. I built my career, raised my kids and created a home here -- and divorced too. This country has been my entire adult life. My social connections/friendships have faded over the years. Some friends disappeared and many of the newer relationships I've tried to build feel transactional or one-sided. And this made it feel very isolating and now feel disconnected in a place that used to feel like home. I know I’ve outgrown this phase of life. I moved from Asia to France at 24, then to the US two years later, so starting over in a new country isn’t unfamiliar to me. But this move feels emotionally heavier because now there are deep roots, especially my kids. They’re adults now with their own lives, careers and relationships.…
