After one of the strangest hurricane seasons in modern history, the Atlantic finally has its first hurricane. And Isaias is making up for lost time. Hurricane Isaias strengthened late Wednesday over the Gulf, becoming the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season more than four months after the season officially began. The delay is extraordinary: 2026 had already become the longest hurricane-free Atlantic season of the satellite era, with the previous benchmark for such a late first hurricane dating back to October 1905.
