Barack Obama has criticized Donald Trump's diplomatic strategy regarding the Iran war during a campaign event in Ohio, describing his administration as “not serious people.”

The former Democratic president added: “The problem is you end up having to pay the price for their lack of seriousness.”

Obama said that Trump had unraveled diplomacy and plunged the U.S. into an unnecessary conflict.

The military operation has dragged on for nearly eight months, resulting in the deaths of 21 American service members and leaving 865 wounded.

Obama's speech in Cleveland, in support of Democratic candidates Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown, comes as polls show widespread voter desire to end the war.
