All through college (business major) they taught the way to retirement is work until Social Security kicks in and if you save slow and steady the whole time you’ll be fine in retirement.

They should instead be teaching people how to retire at 30 by maxing a Roth IRA and other investments at your very first high school job and never touching it for anything until you hit FI/RE.

The work until 60+ mantra is so depressing I think it deters people from planning at all since the horizon is so far away. If we all started saving at 16 for retirement at 30, we’d be a lot better off as a society and individuals.
