Former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who led Japan from 2007-08 and sought to strengthen ties with China during and after his brief tenure, died Thursday at the age of 90, his son announced Monday.
He died of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital, according to local media reports.
The son of former Japanese leader Takeo Fukuda, he took office in September 2007 after Shinzo Abe’s abrupt resignation. The two Fukudas became the country’s first father-and-son pair to serve as prime ministers.
