Last week, I found out I was getting laid off. Family of 3 - me- 36F, 38M, 3.5 toddler. I was so sad but within an hour pulled out my family’s budget and calculated, we would be fine. Total NW is 1.1 mil. Husband makes $150K. I am at $110K. We have rental net income of $16k per year (approx $1,400 per month). No debt except mortgages. 3 trips planned this school year all paid with credit card points. 6 month severance. I’ve been maxing my Roth IRA for over a decade and maxed my 403b that last 5 years. We have 800k in investments - mostly retirement mix of Roth and traditional. Husband gets 15% in retirement from work.
I’ve been working since I was 15. The shock to my identity is real and massive as I was in a fairly high profile role… (esp the shitty way the layoff occurred.) but I am grateful for the hustle and sacrifice.
I am standing on the shoulders of my parents who were first gen and worked 24/7. What a blessing to lose half our income but still be cash flow positive.…
