If you own the new Google Home Speaker , it may be using a lot more of your home internet than you realize. A report from 9to5Google found that some of these speakers are downloading huge amounts of data in the background, even when nobody is using them.
That matters if your internet plan has a monthly data limit. A speaker that mostly sits on a shelf shouldn’t be eating into your allowance.
The numbers come from the writer’s own speaker. It used 17GB in a single day without anyone giving it a voice command or playing music. A burst of close to 10GB came around 3 a.m. Pacific time. On October 13, it downloaded 41GB, and over 30 days the total reached 132GB. A second, lightly used speaker in another home downloaded just 2GB in a month.
That gap shows not every speaker is acting up. Still, 132GB in a month is a lot for a device that mostly waits for someone to ask about the weather.
