Emergency services at the scene (Reuters)
At least three people have died and five others were injured after a section of a volcanic rock formation known as a fairy chimney collapsed in the Cappadocia region of Turkey on Thursday.
The disaster occurred near a parking lot at an entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in Goreme during Turkey's busy Republic Day holiday.
Governor Huseyin Kok stated that recent heavy rains likely triggered the collapse, confirming that two of the deceased were Turkish nationals.
Emergency rescue teams using heavy machinery are continuing to clear the debris and search for any further victims who may remain trapped underneath the fallen rock.
Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that an official investigation has been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collapse.
