Microsoft just shipped a set of familiar command-line tools straight into Windows 11. No subsystem required. No translation layer. The company announced general availability of Coreutils for Windows at its Build 2026 conference. These are native binaries. They deliver the ls, cp, rm, cat and dozens more that developers expect on Linux or macOS. The package comes from a Microsoft-maintained build of the uutils project. That open-source effort has spent years rewriting GNU coreutils in Rust. The result runs as a single multi-call binary on Windows. Scripts written for other platforms now carry over with far less friction. Existing pipelines just work. Or at least most of them do.
