Antonelli is currently battling a viral illness (PA)

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has been excused from mandatory FIA media duties ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix on Thursday while he recovers from a viral illness.

Mercedes expects the 20-year-old Italian to be fit and ready to take part in Friday's two practice sessions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Antonelli can secure the 2026 Formula One World Championship in Mexico City this Sunday by finishing ninth or higher, regardless of other results.

With a 123-point lead over teammate George Russell and only 125 points remaining in the season, Antonelli enters the weekend following his ninth win of the year in Austin.

If Antonelli seals the drivers' title this weekend, he will become the sport's youngest-ever world champion in just his second season in Formula One.
