The cause of death for prolific character actor Richard Riehle has been revealed.

Riehle died on October 15 at age 78 at his home in Los Angeles. He was first reported to have died of natural causes.

According to his death certificate, which TMZ obtained , the cause of death was a stroke, with oropharyngeal cancer listed on the document as the underlying cause.

Oropharyngeal cancer is a rare type of throat cancer that can begin in the tongue, the roof of the mouth, the tonsils, and the walls of the throat. Additionally, according to the National Institutes of Health , patients with cancer are at an increased risk of ischemic stroke.

A representative for Riehle said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of our beloved client, Richard Riehle.”

The statement continued, “A remarkable actor whose career in theater, film, and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, Richard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy.”
